Gordon House Visitor Center

The Oregon Garden | Silverton, Oregon
The Gordon House in Silverton, Oregon stands as Frank Lloyd Wright’s only project to ever be completed in the state, making it a site with incredible architectural and cultural significance to the region. Our studio worked with the Gordon House’s board of trustees to develop a moderately sized visitor center to accommodate visitors groups, back of house operations and larger events.
Over the course of the 11-week studio, my design explored the concept of layered planes emerging from the landscape, shaping the way visitors move through and experience the site. Careful attention was given to user flow and spatial transitions, with material choices drawing inspiration from Wright’s architecture while expressing a contemporary, streamlined character. I additionally worked with the university’s head structural design professor to develop a timber structural system which could support the ambitious use of cantilevered concrete slabs.
