Laurel Hill Neighborhood | Eugene, Oregon
This project was developed in my first 484 studio under Professor Peter Keys, focusing on climate-resilient multifamily housing. Given a selection of pre-approved local development sites, I chose one on the east side of Floral Hill—an area historically vulnerable to wildfires. The design responds directly to this risk, applying strategies explored throughout the studio to create a resilient, sustainable solution.
The principal design considerations for this project are fire resistance, higher density middle income housing, sustainable integrated systems, and effective use of a graded site. The modular system is designed to be efficient, repeatable, and adaptive to the needs of the occupants. It utilizes four separate types of units which are a synthesis of a 1,100 square foot primary space and a 300 square foot flex space. The modular characteristics of this system makes it ideal for integration on other sites in the surrounding area.
unit type 1
Separated (large block)
Unit type 1 is comprised solely of a primary block which makes up the majority of the housing complex. The unit is an 1100 square foot 2 bedroom unit with one bath. It is configured for young working professionals who are working at the university or in downtown Eugene.
unit type 2
Separated (small block)
Unit type 2 is comprised solely of a flex block which sits adjacent to the primary block. The unit is a 300 square foot studio 1 bed with an en suite bath. It is configured for University graduate students who are looking for a smaller affordable unit adjacent to the University neighborhood.
second floor
unit type 3
Horizontally Connected
Unit 3 is comprised of both a primary block and flex block connected on the same level. The unit is a 1400 square foot studio 3 bedroom unit with two baths. It is configured for young families with the need for more bedrooms, flexible space and plenty of extra storage.
unit type 4
Vertically Connected
Unit type 4 is comprised of a primary block and the flex block directly below it. The unit is a 1350 square foot studio 2 bedroom unit with 2 baths and a dedicated private office/work space. It is configured for retirees and professionals working from home who are looking for separate space to work on personal or professional projects. This unit type can easily be created through the renovation of a type 1 and type 2 unit.
